The Cheapest Insurance Policy Can Be the Most Expensive One You Ever Buy

Nobody likes paying for insurance.

I own an insurance agency, and I’ll say that myself.

Insurance is one of those expenses we all hope we never actually need to use. Whether you're paying for homeowners insurance, auto insurance, business insurance, or coverage for your property, it's natural to look at the price first.

When you're comparing insurance quotes, one of the first questions people usually ask is:

“How much is it going to cost?”

That’s a fair question. Price matters.

But after years of working with families, business owners, property owners, and individuals here in Abilene and across Texas, I think there’s another question that matters even more:

“What happens if something actually goes wrong?”

Because that’s when you find out whether you bought a good insurance policy or simply a cheap one.

Insurance Is About Managing Risk

I’m not only an insurance agency owner. I’m also a business owner and real estate investor, so I tend to look at insurance a little differently.

Every household, business, property, and investment has some level of risk.

You can choose to take on that risk yourself, or you can transfer some of it to an insurance company through the right insurance coverage.

For example, let's say you own a $1 million commercial building. You could potentially choose lower limits or leave certain exposures uninsured and save money on your insurance premium.

That might work out just fine.

Until the building burns down.

The same principle applies to your home, vehicles, business equipment, rental properties, employees, and liability exposures.

Saving $1,000 a year on your insurance premium might sound like a great deal.

Taking on an additional $250,000 of uninsured risk to save that $1,000 might not.

That’s the conversation I believe you should be having with your insurance agent.

The Coverage You Don't Know You're Missing

One of the biggest problems I see isn't necessarily that people don't have insurance.

It's that they think they're covered for something when they aren't.

A business owner may have general liability insurance but no cyber liability coverage.

A homeowner may assume all water damage is covered under their homeowners insurance.

A contractor may have commercial auto insurance but discover after an accident that a particular vehicle, driver, or use of the vehicle wasn't properly covered.

A property owner may have insurance on a home but never tell their insurance company that the property is being used as a short-term rental.

On paper, everything can look fine.

Then a claim happens.

Suddenly, the details matter.

A lot.

This is one reason working with an experienced insurance agent is so important. Your agent should understand what you own, how you use it, and what could potentially go wrong so they can help identify gaps in your insurance coverage before you need to file a claim.

Your Insurance Should Change When Your Life Changes

Another common mistake is treating insurance as something you buy once and forget about.

But your life doesn't stay the same.

Your insurance shouldn't either.

Maybe you:

  • Buy another home or rental property

  • Remodel your house

  • Add a pool or other major improvement

  • Have a teenager start driving

  • Purchase a new vehicle or truck

  • Buy new business equipment

  • Hire additional employees

  • Start a new business

  • Begin renting out a property

  • Purchase a commercial building

  • Grow your business significantly

  • Start offering a new service

Any of these changes can affect your insurance needs.

For example, if your business grows from $500,000 in annual revenue to $2 million, your insurance needs may look very different than they did when the business was smaller.

If you purchase an investment property and decide to turn it into a short-term rental, that can also change the type of insurance coverage you need.

That’s why I believe one of the most valuable things an independent insurance agent in Abilene, Texas can do isn't simply shop your insurance every year.

It's understand what you're building.

When we understand your family, your business, your properties, and your long-term plans, we can have a much better conversation about the risks you may not have considered.

There Is Nothing Wrong With Shopping for Price

I don't want this to sound like price isn't important.

It absolutely is.

Nobody should intentionally overpay for insurance.

One of the advantages of working with an independent insurance agency is that we aren't tied to just one insurance company. Independent agents can work with multiple insurance carriers, which gives us the ability to compare different options and look for a combination of appropriate coverage and competitive pricing.

That's important.

But there is a big difference between asking:

“How can we insure this properly for the best possible price?”

and asking:

“What is the absolute cheapest insurance policy I can buy?”

Those two questions can lead to very different outcomes.

The cheapest homeowners insurance policy may have coverage limitations you don't fully understand.

The cheapest commercial insurance policy may not provide the protection your business actually needs.

The cheapest auto insurance policy may leave you with limits that don't make sense for your financial situation.

The goal shouldn't be to find the cheapest insurance.

The goal should be to find the right insurance coverage at a price that makes sense for you.

My Goal Isn't to Sell You More Insurance

Sometimes the right recommendation is more coverage.

Sometimes it's a different type of coverage.

Sometimes it means increasing your deductible because you are financially comfortable taking on more of the risk yourself.

Sometimes it means moving your insurance to another carrier.

And sometimes, the answer is that what you already have is appropriate.

The goal shouldn't be to sell you as much insurance as possible.

The goal is to identify the risks that could seriously hurt you financially and then decide which of those risks make sense to insure.

That is especially important for business owners.

You can spend years building a company, hiring employees, purchasing equipment, buying real estate, and creating something valuable.

A five-minute decision about an insurance policy shouldn't be the thing that puts all of that at risk.

Why an Independent Insurance Agent Can Make a Difference

When you work directly with a single insurance company, you're generally choosing from that company's products.

When you work with an independent insurance agency, your agent can compare options from multiple insurance carriers.

That doesn't automatically mean an independent agent will always find the cheapest premium. It means we can look at your situation from a broader perspective and help you compare coverage, pricing, deductibles, limits, and different insurance companies.

At Silverthorne Insurance Brokers, that's the approach we take with our clients.

We're an independent insurance agency serving Abilene, Texas, and surrounding communities. We work with individuals, families, property owners, and businesses to help them understand their insurance options and make informed decisions about managing risk.

Whether you're looking for homeowners insurance, auto insurance, commercial insurance, business liability insurance, property insurance, or coverage for another type of risk, our job is to help you understand what you're actually buying.

Ask Your Insurance Agent This Question

The next time you review your insurance, don't just ask:

“Can you save me money?”

Ask:

“If you were in my shoes, what would you be worried about?”

That's a much better conversation.

A good insurance agent should be able to explain your biggest exposures, where your current insurance policies respond, where they don't, and which risks may be worth addressing.

You may still decide to take some of those risks yourself.

That's okay.

The important thing is that it's an informed decision.

Because when a claim happens, the question isn't what your insurance policy cost.

The question is:

What does my insurance policy actually cover?

And by then, it's too late to change it.
